What are translators qualification required by ISO 17100 ?

ISO 17100:2015 defines requirements for the translator qualification & competence and translation process directly affecting the quality and delivery of translation services:

The translator fulfils at least one of the following criteria:

1. has obtained a degree in translation, linguistics or language studies or an equivalent degree that includes significant translation training, from a recognized institution of higher education;
2. has obtained a degree in any other field from a recognized institution of higher education and has the equivalent of two years of full-time professional experience in translating;
3. has the equivalent of five years of full-time professional experience in translating.

ISO 17100 have 4 major elements

Resources.

The TSP shall have a documented process in place to ensure that the translator selected to perform translation tasks have the required competences and qualifications. The TSP shall keep a record of the evidence upon which the professional competences of translators, revisers, reviewers, and other professionals have been demonstrated.

Pre-production processes and activities.

The TSP is required to establish processes in place for handling and analysing enquiries, determining project feasibility, preparing quotations, and entering into agreements with clients.

Translation Process

The TSP is required to manage all aspects of the production process including translation to final verification.

Post-production processes.

The TSP shall have a process in place for handling client feedback, for assessment of client satisfaction, and for making appropriate corrections and handle closing administration.
